Lem has written other movies since this (KAFKA, DARK CITY, THE LIMEY). They are saying, Look - this is the greatest script ever written and Hollywood is too afraid to make it. Youll read just about everywhere that FORD is "one of the finest examples of writing for movies." I think most say this more as a comment on Hollywood than the material. Lem Dobbs has, if you think about it, had a weird career. And if youre not giving an audience something they never would have thought of themselves in a black comedy.you lose them forever. You have to be three steps ahead of the audience because if youre not you wont be able to throw them. Everything has to be weird, surreal and off.
